About Author

When I was 20, I made what seemed like an insane decision: I dropped out of university in Novosibirsk, Siberia, and moved to Berlin with nothing but determination and terrible German.

I learned the language the hard way – by showing up, working, connecting, and making plenty of mistakes along the way. Eventually, I got into a German university and spent the next decade building a career in EdTech, specializing in UX research and research operations.

“Anna, you gotta niche down."

People keep on telling me: “Anna, you gotta niche down. You cannot make money with 5 things at the same time. You’ll mess up your sales. Pick one thing that you do, and write and yap about it, all the time.”

Yupp, it is all correct. It DOES make it easier for a business to know exactly what they are solving, for whom and how.

However, I ain’t no business, I am a human being who has been given a tax number for freelance work, and now I try and make it work and not end up living under a bridge. (Meant as fun, real concern sometimes tho.)

You know why I also think this whole “figure all of this out before you do things” story is harmful?
People prefer to think: “I’ll start putting myself out there and reach out to my network once I have this figured out.”

SURPRISE: you’ll never have it all figured out. But the earlier you start showing up in people’s DMs and feeds, the more you will move forward with this whole “figuring things out” thing.

So, here I am, doing those things:

-> Research and Research Operations freelance work
-> Event and workshop facilitation
-> Community building (Hello Laid off & fabulous),
-> Mentoring and group learning courses
-> Building affiliate partnerships

And somehow, 6 months in, it works.

Is it perfect? No.
Is it moving and developing, and do I feel like I’m growing every day? Yes!
