When I was 20, I made what seemed like an insane decision: I dropped out of university in Novosibirsk, Siberia, and moved to Berlin with nothing but determination and terrible German.

I learned the language the hard way – by showing up, working, connecting, and making plenty of mistakes along the way. Eventually, I got into a German university and spent the next decade building a career in EdTech, specializing in UX research and research operations.

Hire one person whose salary comes out of your own pocket, and management’s hiring & firing decisions suddenly make a lot more sense.

The caution and the “let’s give it one more quarter”  and too many hiring rounds because no one wants to take responsibility for the wrong hire. It all clicks the second the money is yours.

Maybe there is a camp that turn employees demanding value from employees into employees that think about the value they bring and leave when they become resentful?

Asking for a friend.
