Number 1: When you are on a visa (e.g. Blue Card) or waiting for you permanent residency… it seems easier to move on.
Because you are here to work, not fight for your rights or receive unemployment benefits you’ve paid into. Shade aside – Legal action takes months, visa clocks run in weeks, so people fold. Understandably – the stress of someone on a visa is immense. And still – with pushing back for severance leverage, keeping the legal end-of-employment date open, and buying runway.
Number 2: The “sign or we fire you anyway” framing
The Aufhebungsvertrag (termination agreement) is presented as the inevitable outcome, just nicer – and people believe it.
“If you don’t accept it, they will be eliminating the position anyway.”
This absolutely should not scare anyone, but it certainly does.
Number 3: Mix of Fear of high cost + no legal insurance
This myth that without legal insurance you are basically rightless has cost many people very unfair undignified exits.
